Preconceived Ideas

We always hear the phrase Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Most people have preconceived ideas about certain things. Sometimes, we can be surprised at when we try them out, that most is not what it seems.

What am i babbling about, you ask?

Okay, for me my preconceived thoughts were all erotic romances just had sex and no plot, and that I'd never enjoy them.

*Waits for the gasps, thrown tomatoes, or something*

So, a few years ago, I joined various Yahoo groups both readers loops and writers. All of a sudden I'm introduced to a whole bunch of new authors, many in genres I've never bothered to read.

But one day, I decided I'd try a book out in the erotic romance genre.

The book was Sweet Surrender.

And let me tell you, I was absolutely blown away by this book! Yes, it had some scenes it it that had me blushing, scenes that I'd never imagined I'd enjoy reading in a romance book. But the depth of emotion in the characters, the plot, the story line had me captivated. I am hooked.

Yes, there are some erotic romances that are sex just for the sake of sex, and have no real underlying plot. But I've just found me a ton of new authors in this genre to try. My comfort zone has just expanded.

Then I started reviewing. Let me tell you, I have read so many books while reviewing that I may never have picked up otherwise.  Then again, my reading horizons have broadened.  I have opened my eyes to many new genres and types of books I have politely said "No" to before.

I still haven't jumped on board on the m/m genre, I don't read a lot of menages, and I still can't get into historicals unless they're recent or time travel, but I have been reading so many new things and enjoying it.

So, what is a genre, or a subject in a book you've never been interested in? What would it take for you to give it a shot?

Review: The Nightmare Project

Blurb:
After killing her husband and being committed to an asylum for it, Julia Montgomery finds her life spiralling out of control. Her illness gets her into the Nightmare Project, where doctors claim the invasive treatments will cure her; but can she trust them?
When strange killings start to take place – and she is the accused – she decides to take her life back into control. A daring escape with the help of another patient leads her on a journey of discovering the truth, but is it too late?

My Thoughts:   I'm always on the look out for a good horror/ psychological suspense book. The Nightmare Project hit right on the spot. Thrills, suspense, horror, and a bit of paranormal. It's enough to give you goosebumps, especially if you're reading this late at night (Like I did!)  Julia is trying to fight to keep going. She's in an asylum, and there's not a person she can trust. Weird things begin to happen, and it sends Julia on a search for the truth. Is being there driving her off the edge, or is something more going on?

This is the first book in the Dangerous Minds Trilogy, and after reading this one, I can't wait for more! I have to know what happens.

If you're a fan of psychological horror, and you're not afraid......then grab yourself a copy of this book.

Dana Pratola Interview

Welcome back to another exciting week here at SGBR&M. We're starting off the week with an interview of new author Dana Pratola!  Come by and comment, get to know this author.

First off, tell me a little about yourself, and your books!   So far it’s just the one book, The Covering. It tells the story of Tessa, a Christian woman, who meets and falls for Gunnar, a hostile, self-destructive unbeliever. But he's also HOT, lol.  She can't understand why God would toss her together with a man like him, knowing she would be attracted, so she wonders if it's a trick of the enemy to make her stumble in her faith. Meanwhile, Gunnar is tormented by demonic visitations and looking for any way out. Killing himself might be the only way to end his miserable existence. But God has other plans.
As for me, I’ve been married 25 years and have 3 grown children. We live in a New Jersey suburb but ideally I’d love to move to the country and see horses when I look out my window. I’d probably have to move alone since the rest of the family are “city folk.”

How long have you been writing?   As long as I can remember.

 Plotter or not?
I do an overview and try to go from there but anything can happen =-)

When you aren't writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies/ past times?  Reading, walking in the woods.

Who are some of your favorite authors? Favorite genre?   Jane Austin and Nora Roberts top the list. I also love Eloisa James, Deanna Gist, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn… too many to name. I'm all about Romance.

If you were given the chance to co-author a book with someone, who would you chose?     I’d have to go with Nora since she specializes in contemporary romance.

What's the strangest thing you've done, or strangest question you have had to ask for research purposes?   How can I get a huge quantity of African Fire Ants on US soil?

What talent do you wish you had, but don't? (For me, I wish I could draw better!)   I wish I could sing or play piano, not necessarily together.

What's a typical writing day for you like?    No such thing. I write when I can, where I can.

How many different genres do you write in?   I write Romance but several “dialects” such as paranormal romance and romantic suspense.

If only one, do you ever think about writing a different book than what you are known for?    I may try historical one day.

What do you do to celebrate a book release day?   I’ve only had the one so far but I asked people to change their FB profile picks to my book cover for the day, and gave away a PDF copy of the book. It was awesome!

We all know there's trends in writing. A certain type of book, or genre explodes in popularity. Some fade into the dark. What's a type of book you'd love to see make a comeback?    I just like to see good fiction out there, whatever genre.

What are three things your fans don't know about you that may surprise them?    1) I know all the words to every song in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Actually I believe I know every word of dialogue too =-D; 2) I always smell the milk before I use it; 3) I go horseback riding almost every year for my birthday.

What are you working on at the moment in terms of writing?   Several novels, one of which is paranormal. Can’t wait to get that one out =-)

What's something you'd like to accomplish that you have not yet done?   Nothing glamorous or exciting. I’d love to have the WHOLE house clean at the same time. So far it’s as much of a dream as climbing the Matterhorn.

Dana, I thank you for stopping by today, and look forward to more from you in the future! Congratulations onf your first book, and here's to many more! *Clinks glass to celebrate*

Review: Vigilant

Blurb: Where do the mortals fit in the war between the angels and demons?

One surviving hijacker is charged with the murders of a hundred citizens.
One cop sees her innocence.

Alliance I-Marshal Weber hauls Yadira to her home planet and infiltrates the human-trafficking ring controlling her. But he finds himself unbearably attracted to his witness. A gift for detecting deception reveals she's the next victim of a criminal industry.

Descending into shadowy worlds of slavery, Yadira endures a dark angel stalking her dreams and watches the quiet I-Marshal become dangerous in her defense. Everything about him moves her...except the memory of seeing him execute the most important man in her life. Shouldn't she take vengeance? Delusions of a heavenly guardian affect her mind.

Slavers and demons plan to snatch her from Weber's custody while he is uncovering connections, and Weber won't hesitate to execute the guilty surrounding Yadira. Who but a son of fire can save her from fiends harboring hardcore fantasies of harming her?

Note: This book contains adult language used as profanity. Because criminals say naughty words.

Vigilant is a part of the series I-Marshal Stories. Look for them.

My Thoughts:

Worldbuilding is a process that isn't as easy as one may think. And for this book, the worldbuilding was amazing! Set in the future, Michele Hart creates a fun, imaginative story in Vigilant.  Readers are sure to be wowed with this non-stop action, edge of the seat never knowing what's going to happen next.

I haven't read many sci-fi romance books before, and I'm wondering why not!  This book was a treat, and absolute blast for me, and I enjoyed it. There are plenty of mixed genres within this book. I-Marshall Weber and Yadira are interesting, intriguing, and they make a great team in this action packed thrill ride.

Readers, take note of this book, in fact, take note of this author. Michele Hart writes a wild ride that you shouldn't miss!

Review- Georgia On My Mind

Since Georgie Quinn’s mother died after a brief battle with breast cancer, the highlight of her life has become “jogger stalking” every morning with her roommates Tess and Cat. Stuck running the senior center her mother founded in Newport, RI, until a replacement director is found, Georgie dreams of returning to her glamorous life in Atlanta. As that life begins to unravel, she discovers a whole new one in Newport where the jogger turns out to be sexy detective and tree hugger Nathan Caldwell. Determined to get her mind off her many problems—including a possible threat to her own health—Georgie indulges in what she intends to be a no-holds-barred one-night stand with Nathan. Unfortunately, Nathan has other ideas and sets out to have a relationship with her. Tess, on the run from an abusive husband, and Cat, who raised her younger brother and sister, hook up with Nathan’s brothers, Ben, an injured Iraqi war veteran, and Ian, a single-father and talented musician. Add a zany cast of seniors who seem determined to drive Georgie slowly mad with their never-ending needs and comparisons to her sainted mother, and you’ve got the ingredients for a fast-paced, often comical, emotional journey that leads Georgie straight to the home of her heart.

My Thoughts: Marie Force does it again! She creates an emotional, sexy, wonderful story that draws the readers in. She  has a way of creating characters that make the reader fall in love with them instantly. Add in plenty of conflict, drama, and heartache, and you've got a beautiful contemporary love story. Georgia On My Mind is no different.  Set in Rhode Island, this story features Georgie Quinn. She's at a rough place in her life. She's uprooted herself from her home and a job she loves in Atlanta to help out with a senior center her mother ran before she died. Georgie wasn't about to let it all fall apart, so she's taking over until a replacement can be found. Georgie doesn't expect this to last long, nor does she realize just how much her life is going to change while being there.

She and her two roommates, Cat and Tess, find themselves gawking over a hot guy that goes for a jog in the morning. The three women find a common bond, and become fast friends. Each have their own sordid pasts, but each are an important part of the story.

Then, on a pretty bad day, Georgia comes face to face with Mr. Hottie. In fact, he kind of yells at her about something. (You want to know what, read the book and find out!) He feels terrible about it, and that starts off a new chain of events. Nate is instantly attracted to Georgie, but she's got a wall up. No need to get involved, she says. Why? She isn't going to be here for long.

Not only do readers get Georgie and Nate's story, but both Cat and Tess will find happiness, too. With Nate's brother, in fact!  I was surprised at how the author paired up the couples, but then again, it made for quite a bit of conflict and intrigue.  There's moments in this story that will have your emotions on fire, plenty of hot sex, and some tearful moments. It's emotionally touching, is both a story of love, friendship, and self discovery.

If you love contemporary stories with characters that are near and dear to your heart, breathe life right off the pages, and not to mention the sexual tension that's bound to be toe curling, then don't miss this book. In fact, don't miss any of Marie Force's heartfelt books.

Are you one of those people....?

Are you the kind of person that's obsessed with stats?

Apparently, I am. Did I realize this before? Maybe. It just dawned on me today, while i was playing a silly little game on my tablet. When I lost the game, I had an option to submit my score, and i couldn't wait to see where I ranked in different areas. They showed two things- one was my ranking in the last 100 plays. When I submitted this particular score, i ranked 10th. I was not in the top 100 plays of the week.

What did I do?

I'm sure you can guess, right?

I played some more. And a few more, and so on. I have other things I could do. I've got writing, reading, housework....you get the picture.

But because I am obsessed with stats, I procrastinated to try and up my ranking.

By the way, the game I'm talking about? Papi Jump. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with that game. All I do is try to keep the little red smiley face from falling. I turn my tablet this way, and that way to keep him going up.

It's funny how the simple things can amuse you. And keep you from doing other things at the same time.

Another piece of proof about being obsessed with stats is that I check my Amazon Review ranking quite a few times a week? Why? I have no freaking clue, other than what I stated today. Obsession.

Am I going to be the same way when I finally have a book to publish? Probably. Oh yeah, I'm going to be all over it. *Sighs*

So tell me, please tell me I'm not alone. Are you obsessed with stats? What are you always looking at and trying to improve your numbers on?

Until next time,

Guest Blogger Elysa Hendricks!

Please welcome Elysa Hendricks to Storm Goddess Book Reviews & More. Elysa is kind enough to stop by this new blog to share a few words! Below Elysa's blog will be some information about where you can find this author. Elysa, you now have the floor! (or in this case, the blog spotlight, lol)

BORING IS GOOD
EXCITEMENT IS VASTLY OVERRATED

In "real" life boring is good. Excitement is vastly overrated.
In "real" life excitement usually means injured or sick children, ailing senior parents, lost jobs, broken down cars, empty bank accounts and household repairs.
I'm not an adventurous person. I'm not a coordinated person. I can't dance. I can't sing. I can't ride a bike, forget a motorcycle. I tried riding a motor scooter once. Ended up in a ditch. When my friends convinced me to try again I managed to fall off the danged thing. So I don't like taking risks. They usually result in bruises and blood, and the sight of blood makes me queasy. I prefer my "real" life to be a lovely shade of boring beige with just a few sprinkles of pastel excitement - visiting with friends and family, dinner out, a movie, a vacation at a quiet beach.
That's why I adore books, both reading and writing them. In a book I can dance, sing, or roar down the road on big old hog. I can risk my life skiing, surfing, treasure hunting, mountain climbing or trekking through the Amazon jungle. I can shoot guns (without blowing off fingers or toes.) I can fight invading alien forces here on Earth or off in space. Zombies? Vampires? Werewolves? No problem. Sitting safe in my easy chair I can handle them. And in between the explosions and flying body parts, I can have sex with a leather-clad bad boy - or two. There are no STDs to worry about when your partners exist only between the pages of a book and your imagination.
In a book I can travel the Oregon Trail or the Trail of Tears and still be home for dinner. The only danger I face is burning said dinner while I'm engrossed in the story, but there's even an upside to that - ordering in pizza. Or better yet dinner out somewhere, one of those pastel sprinkles of excitement I prefer.
That's why people who tell me they don't have time to or like to read confuse me. Are their lives so "exciting" that they don't need or want to escape into another existence even for a short while?
So I'm happy to live my boring "real" life and get all my excitement between the pages of a book.

That's some interesting insight, Elysa. And to add my thoughts, that's one thing I enjoy about being a writer, and a reader. You can live your life through the characters you read and/or write about. That's why I love books! They leave so much room for the imagination.

Thanks for blogging with me today. I appreciate you helping out a new blogger.

website: http://www.elysahendricks.com/

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elysa-Hendricks-Author/137316289643103

BIO: After trying her hand at a variety of careers: retail sales, insurance underwriter, video store owner, home day care provider, and motherhood, Elysa Hendricks, a longtime reader of romance, sat down to write a short contemporary romance. When her heroine turned out to be a winged, telepathic alien, Elysa decided she enjoyed writing stories set in different places and times. Fortunately for the reading public that book remains hidden under her bed along with the evil killer dust bunnies.

After spending some time learning how to write she then penned a series of fantasy romances. GEMINI MOON, CRYSTAL MOON, SHADOW MOON and FORBIDDEN MOON are available from ImaJinn Books. She's received her rights back on her three books with Dorchester Publishing and will soon direct publish them. STAR CRASH is a sexy/sci-fi/adventure romance in the vein of Star Trek meets Planet of the Apes. THE SWORD AND THE PEN is a contemporary fantasy that combines Zenia, The Warrior Princess with Stranger Than Fiction and STAR RAIDERS is another futuristic set in the same universe as STAR CRASH.

With THE BABY RACE and COUNTERFEIT LOVE Elysa has penned two short contemporary love stories set in the real world of small town America.

While living in Illinois she helped found the Windy City Chapter and the Futuristic, Fantasy & Paranormal Chapters of Romance Writers of America as well as taught workshops on writing at writer’s conferences and at local community colleges. Recently relocated to central Ohio she’s happy to be part of the Central Ohio Fiction Writer family. Someday she dreams of writing on a laptop while sitting on a tropical beach.

Elysa has some books out on Amazon and Smashwords. The Baby Race and Counterfeit Love (There will be reviews for those books here soon.)

Sherry D. Ficklin Interview and Born of Blood Review!

This is my first author interview on my blog.  So exciting!  I am honored to be part of a blog tour with Sherry  Ficklin!

Welcome, Sherry, and congratulations on your new release! I'm honored to be interviewing you. I'm pretty new to this, but I'm very excited to have you here on Storm Goddess Book Reviews & More.

Thanks so much for having me and helping me celebrate the new book!

So, let's get down to the business. Some questions! How about it?

  1. Okay, first off- how long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since, well, forever. I had a great creative writing teacher in high school who really got me excited about it. I’ve been writing on and off since then. I’ve been writing professionally for about five years now. It’s been amazing.

  1. When did you decide you wanted to write for publication?
Well, I don’t know if it was really a conscious decision. I had just finished the first Gods of Fate book and I wanted to sort of test the waters. I always figured that if no one wanted to publish it, I’d do it myself just to have it for my kids as they grew up. I sort of stumbled into publishing. It’s been an amazing process and I feel very fortunate to have worked and to be working with the people I am.

  1. What is your writing schedule like?
I write all day Tuesday and Thursday, and I scrape an hour or two whenever else I can. I try to be scheduled about it, but sometimes, life happens. I have four kiddos. I adapt.

  1. Plotter, or panster? I know, everyone must ask this!
Um, a little of both? I plot to the point where I at least know where/how the story will end. I try to do an outline so I have a place to refer to with specific plot points I want to hit, but most of the time my characters run all over me. By about the third chapter the outline is in the waste bin. It’s a bit crazy to think about my characters taking over, but they really do. The best made plans of mice….

  1. Other than writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies/ passtimes?
Oh, so many things… I love traveling, movies, reading, hiking, shooting. My current obsession is Doctor Who, so I’m catching up on the newest seasons of that. Oh, and I collect rubber ducks. What can I say? Random is my middle name.

  1. What genres do you love to READ?
I’ll read anything except true crime. I’m kind of a YA nerd, and fantasy too.

  1. Do you own an ereader? If so, which one? If not, do you ever plan to?
I do have a Sony reader. I really like it. I’ll use it to check out new authors, but when I fall in love with a book or series, I’ll buy the paperbacks. I do love holding paper books. Digital is cool but some things can’t be replaced!

  1. If you had an opportunity to co-author a book with someone, who would you chose and why?
Oh that’s tough. There are so many people I’d love to work with but I’m just neurotic enough that I’d probably be impossible to write with. I’m going to say J. Scott Savage. I like to stalk him at conferences. He’s very kind and funny. I think he’d be great to work with.

  1. Even though many times, Hollywood doesn't do books to movies well, what if you were to be on the team that gets to adapt a book to film- which book would you like to see go to film?

I’d love to remake The Lightning Thief and do all the Percy Jackson books. I think they really missed an opportunity to do that story justice.

  1. If you could turn one of YOUR books to a movie, which would it be?
I think that’s every writer’s secret dream, to see their books on the big screen. But I think Palmetto Moon would make a great TV show, kind of Castle meets True Blood.

  1. Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love Rick Riordan, Laurell Hamilton, Terry Goodkind, and Stacey Jay. Eclectic, I know.

  1. What do you do to celebrate release day?
I usually have a little release party with friends and family. That is after all the blog tour kickoff stuff is done. Mostly I just try to breathe. It’s such a nerve wracking experience.

  1. What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
The biggest thing to remember is to never give up. As long as you love what you are doing and keep pushing forward, you are guaranteed to succeed.

  1. If you had a supernatural ability, what would you have?
I would love to have the ability to teleport. I hate flying commercial and I’ve discovered I no longer have the patience for anything not delivered at the speed of tweet. *Curse you Twitter*

  1. And last, but not least- if you could be a supernatural being, what would you choose?
That’s another tough question. I suppose I’d like to be a psychic like Sophie’s sister Lacy. Getting a heads up from the universe every once in a while would really come in handy. Plus, Lacy has this great ability to see things exactly as they are, it’s a rare gift and one I wish I had.

Thank you, Sherry, for an awesome interview. I loved your answers!

And now, onto Born Of Blood and my review!

Born of Blood is a witty, adventurous  novel, in the paranormal genre. The story grabbed me from the start, and what an opening scene it was!

Sophie is a young woman that has a vampire in her attic (Her ex, in fact. Yeah that makes for some interesting history, doesn't it?) Sophie's mother is always trying to set her up and see her settled down. Everyone wonders why Sophie isn't with Eric, despite the incident years ago.

Sherry's writing is fun and fast. I can tell this author takes great time and detail to create these characters, because they are very realistic readers can relate.

If you enjoy reading paranormal, then I suggest getting a copy of Born Of Blood. Though, you'll have to wait just a few more days to get your hands on a copy!

Want to see some of the other stops Sherry is making on the blog tour? go Here:  http://sherryficklin.blogspot.com/2011/09/born-of-blood-blog-tour.html

Born Of Blood will be available on October 9th, through Tell-Tale Publishing, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other epubs
