Sweet Cravings Eva Lefoy

Riding the waves of a sugar high, Violet Cunningham seduces the town’s newest pastry chef, slathering him with whipped cream in his secret kitchen. But all that is made of sugar melts, and her brazenness vanishes soon after their tryst, leaving her battling old insecurities about her waistline and appetites, courtesy of her mother. Positive she’s only made a fool of herself, she’s mortified when her boss sends her back to sexy Chef Max’s kitchen and into the proverbial frying pan. After a red-hot date, her chef disappears, and Violet’s emotions simmer to a boil, forcing her to confront the awful truth: there’s more to life than pastry.

Review: Sweet Cravings is....well, anything but sweet, at least when it comes to the sexual nature of this book.  But it's a fun, sexy little story that makes for a quick, yet satisfying read. The story is in first person, which is okay for a shorter read, I found.  I enjoy a good story that mixes pasty chefs and some hot lust. This one definitely has that. It's hot!  There wasn't much time for characterization, but it turned out fine because this was meant to be a story to turn down the thermostat, but the hot scenes weren't overdone by any matter. I enjoyed reading Sweet Cravings and the authors's voice really shines. I'd like to see what else Ms. Lefoy has to offer.

Excerpt:

“You hungry, sweetheart?” His hot gaze left a trail on my skin and heated through more than one layer of fabric. The innuendo in his voice was unmistakable. He tucked a stray hair behind my ear with a super-warm finger whose touch promised tingling satisfaction. I held my breath and nodded. “For what?” he whispered.

I wanted to whimper. Wanted to melt right there on my kitchen floor. I’m good at bravado—up to a certain point—but being interrogated, even by a hottie, or especially by a hottie, turns me shy real quick. And Max’s stare-right-through-me intensity made me very shy, very quick. Made it hard to say that one little word…the one I so badly wanted to say: You. I opened my mouth but he’d started talking again.

“You see, I know all about hungers. About appetites.” He circled me slowly. Like a tiger using its steamy breath to tenderize its next meal. “And how to satisfy them.”

Maybe so. But surely I must come off as a rather odd case? I mean, I practically raped a pastry chef at a chamber of commerce event! Was there even help for people like me? Concern and embarrassment had me chewing my lower lip. I wanted badly to look away from his gaze—look anywhere but into his chocolate-drizzled eyes. But as if he could read my thoughts, he placed a finger under my chin and held me captive with that simple touch.

“All people have appetites,” he stated. “Your appetites, I know how to feed.” He smiled, and the corners of his eyes crinkled. “I will enjoy feeding them. If you will let me.”

I tried to hide a gulp. He sounded sincere. But how could it be? No man had ever made me such an outrageous offer. I had half a mind to put up a hand and stop him right there. But wasn’t this what I truly wanted? Or would I rather stay within the safe bounds of the pastry goal lines forever and watch my waistband expand? Alone? God. I could hear my mother’s voice…. You’ll never get married with those eating habits, Violet. No man will ever want you. Besides, bigger women can’t get pregnant very easily.

As if he could hear my thoughts, he said, “Even if you think some of your hungers are bad…or wrong.” He pressed a gentle kiss to the tip of my nose. “I assure you they are not. They are perfectly normal.” His arm slid around my back and pulled me close, hip to hip. My sex clenched in anticipation. “All of them.”

Spotlight: Only for a Knight

TITLE: Only for  A Knight

VBT Review: Never Say Never

Never Say Never
By: Aimee Duffy

Blurb

When pretend turns to desire, heartbreak is unavoidable.

Sander Chase needs a date for his ex-fiancĂ©e's engagement party, but he doesn't have time for a woman in his life. Between working on the TV show Do You Have What It Takes? and his band reforming, he's too busy for a relationship. What he needs is a pretend girlfriend. He thinks he may have found the perfect woman for the job, and the bribe he offers means she's sure to accept.

After losing her job in the film industry, breaking up with her movie star boyfriend, and finding out her mum has dementia, Chloe Butler returned to the UK determined to put her life back together. The last thing she needs is to parade around London on the arm of a celebrity, and after the heartbreak caused by her ex, she swore she'd never again date a star. But when Sander offers her a chance at her dream job, it's not something she can turn down.

As Chloe gets to know Sander she learns he's nothing like her scumbag ex. But she struggles to fight her attraction to him, knowing their relationship is only for show and their separation date is closing in fast.

Ignoring the insane chemistry between them should be easy for Sander, especially since he carries a secret that means there can be no future for them, but the more time he spends with Chloe, the harder it is to keep his hands to himself.

Content Warning: contains more denial than you'll find in a courtroom, more sexual tension than most people could handle, and explosive sex that some readers may find long overdue.

Excerpt

Chloe Butler’s mouth dropped open. She struggled to remember how to close it as she stared at the man with the expectant expression on his avenging angel face. She couldn’t have heard him right. Sander Chase would never ask someone like her out on a date.

Excuse me?”

He flashed his Hollywood smile. “Come on. Don’t make a guy ask twice.”

Nope, she’d not misheard him, nor had she gone mad. Months of serving him coffee and this was the first time he’d shown any kind of interest in her.

I’m sorry.” She retreated a few steps. She couldn’t date a celebrity, not after what happened the last time. She was just beginning to get her life back together. Not to mention the fact her mum needed her around more than ever. “I can’t. Thank you for the offer.”

Chloe tried to smile politely, but it was harder than usual. She turned to head back to the counter to get on with her work. If her boss Richard caught her talking to a celebrity, he’d get the wrong idea and hand her a P45 before she could explain. After all, the coffee shop was a classy place. Not even the press were allowed in.

A large, warm hand ensnared her wrist and drew her to a halt. Electrified jolts shot up her arm from the contact.

Can’t or don’t want to?”

She turned back to Sander and saw his brow was raised and amusement glittered in his baby blue eyes. Pushy, wasn’t he?

Don’t want to,” she replied, determined not to give him any hope.

Can’t left wiggle room, and there was definitely no wiggle room. She’d sworn off men after the last one had taken her for a mug.

Her reply seemed to please him. His grin grew huge and her heart sped. She frowned at the reaction and put it down to the stress of the situation. After all, as far as she was concerned, her libido was extinct.

That’s perfect.”

Was he mad? From her experience, celebrities could be a little…odd. But she’d never met a full-blown lunatic before. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean.”

Why wasn’t she backing away? Better yet, why wasn’t she demanding he let go of her arm? She darted a glance around the coffee shop. Most of the customers’ attention was on their morning papers.

I don’t need a date. I need a pretend one.”

Hmm, definitely time to call the men in white jackets. Sander had clearly lost his marbles. “I really have to get back to work.”

She couldn’t believe a man who’d been in one of the best male vocal pop groups of all time had lost his mind. Or maybe that’s what the pressure of it did to him. She vaguely recalled the rumors surrounding their split, but hadn’t paid much attention to the international news. At the time she’d been in LA and stupidly in love with a jerk.

Sander released her arm and sighed. “I’m not saying this right, am I?”

He raked a large hand through his golden hair and blew out a breath. She smiled at his exasperation, but still didn’t move away. Chloe shook her head in answer to his question.

My manager called today.” Sander waved his hand to urge her closer. She obeyed. “He wants to get the group back together.” His hot breath caressed her neck and she shivered. The smell of espresso mingled with his spicy aftershave resurrected those bloody extinct hormones. “One of his conditions is that I attend Paul’s engagement party next Friday to show the world I’m over our…fallout.”

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: Pretending isn't working when feelings become very real.

It was just supposed to a ruse, for show. Chloe and Sander have their reasons for not wanting to fall in love, and it's best that they stick to it. But one thing is for sure, their mutual, budding attraction is making them second guess things.

Chloe can't believe someone like Sander would ever talk to her, let alone ask for her company to pull of a stunt that makes them look like a happy, loving couple.  She's got enough on her plate already, and her past history with famous men has left her jaded and a little more than burnt out. But the thing about Sander is he's persistent. Besides, what could it hurt, right? It's only make believe. Or at least, she thought it was.

Sander just wants to move on from his own past. He doesn't need the drama or the media trying to nit pick at things he'd rather just forget. Chloe is a sweet woman, and she ends up lighting a fire within him that makes him second guess everything.  I love how tender he is with Chloe. He's not just one of those famous people putting on an act. Underneath his somewhat rough exterior, there's a kind hearted man inside just needing that one woman to turn it all around for him. It might just be Chloe, if he just opens his heart to the possibility.

Never Say Never is a light, enjoyable read. The characters are likable, and the pace is smooth, transitioning easily between Chloe and Sander. Ms. Duffy has created a brilliant cast of characters that one just wants to root for. All they have to do is let go of the past and give the future a chance.  I recommend this book a s fun, sweet story that will have you cheering for the HEA.

Review Rating: 4.5 LIGHTNING BOLTS.

Blurb:   It’s getting HOT in this bachelor’s kitchen!
Jill Adgate wants three things from life: a successful catering business, a family, and the love of an exceptional man. What she has is no job, a mounting pile of bills, and her outspoken best friend—who sets her up on a blind date with the man who inadvertently ruined Jill’s life.
Chet Castle is a businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved in any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.
Intrigued by her ambition—and determined to get her in bed—Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: work as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking is a recipe for disaster…

Review: I'm not sure what's hotter....summertime in Phoenix, or the sizzling sexual tension between Chet and Jill in Ms. Warner's latest book, Bachelor's Special. I'll tell you what I love more- the heat between these two! I'll take that any day!   Have you ever had an experience with someone that no matter how you try, you just can't forget it? Yet you're not even sure why it still resounds in your mind all the time?  The beginning of this book starts out with just that. Jill is beginning her dream, but one little slip up after another is going to bring everything crashing down.

Fast forward to now. Jill's best friend is setting her up on a blind date. Yeah..awkward! Oh, but it goes get much better!  Who should walk in as her blind date is none other than the man that started her downward spiral. His kisses were lethal- on her heart, and unfortunately, on her career. Yes, I'm gasping sadly over this too. How could a man that gives such passionate kisses derail everything?  It's a big tragic, and yes, I'm being melodramatic, I know.

Chet Castle...Mmmhmm! Sexy, a bit mysterious and a very generous man. At times, he's a bit touch and go, because he's inner trail of thinking drives me nuts at times. Though I don't hold it against him too badly, because I understand his past. He guards his heart with the walls so thick that I  wonder if anyone would ever get through.  He's a softie, we learn as he wants to help Jill out, and we learn a bit more about him and the people that work at his house.

As for Jill, she's a strong woman. She's had it stacked against her, suddenly her career is on the line after the incident with Chet, and she can't seem to get her foot in the door. She's not one to give up, and she's definitely got a stubborn streak, which I admire. Her determination to get where she wants to be keeps her very driven and focused...except where Chet is concerned. Jill faces some issues in the workforce as men tend to think one thing about her because of a simple mistake. It's something that follows her everywhere, and at times, it begins to wear and tear at her.

Jill and Chet are two souls that fight the attraction between them. It's a thin line between the friend zone that they try so desperately hard to not break, but it's becoming more difficult as the time goes on.     I love, love, LOVE the chemistry between the two, and fire meets gasoline in the beginning, especially when Jill gets the wrong ideas about Chet, and let's say she has her little fun of revenge, until he turns the tables on her.

One thing I can always count on when reading a book by Christine is the witty humor, and the light, funny scenes that will muster a few strange looks from people while I'm bursting into laughter.   Her books are fresh, breezy and light in nature and when I finish a story by this author, I feel good. But then the waiting game begins again for another new read from her and I'm not a patient person!  If you enjoy a fun, humorous contemporary romance with plenty of heat and fun, I'm telling you right now, grab yourself a copy of Bachelor's Special! Highly recommended from me.

Interview with Darlene Panzera

Welcome to my stop on the VBT with Darlene Panzera. The last few weeks I've shared the blurbs and excerpts from Darlene's cupcake Diaries series, and today I have the author here for an interview. Please help me welcome her to the blog!

Tell me about yourself, and your writing.

Thank you for having me here today! My husband and I grew up in New Jersey but after we married we followed our best friends out to the Northwest, bought a tract of land, built a house, and had three kids. We love the lakes, rivers, mountains and the fact we are just a short ferry ride away from Seattle.
I write sweet, fun-loving romance! I love writing stories that help inspire people to laugh, value relationships, and pursue their dreams.

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?

I've been writing all my life and have several short stories published in addition to my novel and novellas—all sweet, contemporary romance. But my career launched a year and a half ago when I won the "Make Your Dreams Come True Contest" sponsored by Avon Books which led my novella, THE BET, to be published with Debbie Macomber's FAMILY AFFAIR. The full length novel, re-titled, BET YOU'LL MARRY ME, released December 2012 and my new series is THE CUPCAKE DIARIES: Sweet on You, Recipe for Love, and Taste of Romance.

Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre?

Right now I am published in only the one genre, but in the future I would definitely like to branch out into different types of stories. My daughter and I are in the middle of putting together a children's picture book featuring our two horses. I'd also like to write an inspirational, maybe a suspense, time-travel, medieval, or even young adult.

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?

I am somewhere in-between. I love to plot and fill out crazy charts, but I don't really get to know my characters or the plot until I begin writing the story.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

I'm not sure I have a typical day. I try to get up, check email, and get to work, but the reality is that I have a busy household and have to remain flexible. If I fall behind in my writing I will stay up late after everyone goes to bed to get it done.

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?

I love to read all kinds of things. My favorite romance authors are: Judith McNaught, Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Jane Porter, and Debbie Macomber.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

I would like to write more full length sweet contemporary romance novels and go to the Romance Writers of America National conference. I have never been and I would love to mingle with thousands of other writers and meet new friends.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

To fly. When I was little I had dreams where I really believed I could fly and feel the wind against my face and hair. It felt so real.

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

A tiny, little fairy with magic powers. Or maybe a Leprechaun.

Tell us a little about your latest release.

When my editor at Avon Books asked if I would like to write a series of novellas featuring a cupcake shop, I knew it would be great fun! Set in the artsy, historical fishing community of Astoria, Oregon, two sisters and their friend follow their dream to open a hip little shop named Creative Cupcakes and find themselves fighting off a fanatical Zumba dance instructor, a conceited French bakery chef, and an elusive thief dubbed, 'The Cupcake Bandit.' Is there any time left in their busy schedule to search for true love?

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)

Hmmm, other than family members? I don't think there is anything that I absolutely can't live without except my faith in God, food, and water. Most days I'm grateful just to be alive. I love to camp so I know what it's like to "rough it," but if you want me to name something I would really miss if there was no more power left in the world it would be a hot shower. I really love the fact we have hot showers in this part of the world.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?

Since each author has their own unique 'voice' I'm not sure if co-authoring a book together would work but it sure would be fun to try! I don't know who I would pick but if we wrote about a schizophrenic we could each write sides of the characters different personalities. (Like Gollum/Smeagol in The Hobbit.)

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?

I have two horses and enjoy horseback riding and feeding them carrots. I do arts and crafts and cheer my sons on at football games and metal band concerts. I hike, ski, swim, camp, and play the piano.

What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't done yet. Why not?

I want to go to Hawaii but other obligations within the family have had us flying back and forth to other destinations. I also want to save money so when I do get to Hawaii I can rent a jet-ski.

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

I'd say, "Pick mine!" I would love to see my full length novel, BET YOU'LL MARRY ME, made into a movie. It's packed with action and vivid scenes perfect for a movie.

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?

I wish I was a better singer. I can sing in tune but lack the power in my voice to project across a room.

Favorite color?

Blue.

Weather: Hot or cold?
Hot.

Favorite place to read?

In bed, or by the lake.

Favorite meal?

Roast beef, mashed potatoes, and green beans.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink.

Milk. I love milk so much I could do a commerical.

If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go?

I'd tour the world, (first stop - Hawaii) and meet the people from all the different lands.

Excerpt

~When the chips are down, the buffalo is empty~
Am I a flake? Sort of. But I’m trying to change. My grandfather has property tax issues, and what troubles Granddad, troubles me. Good thing I’ve held down a steady job for months. A major big deal. Not the getting a job part—I’ve had lots—but the held down aspect. Somehow, I always end up unemployed, but not today.
Today, I am Rylie Tabitha Keyes, chauffeur to the seniors at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home (FoY.)
It was dawn Sunday as I eased my employer’s van from one freeway onto another. After that, I concentrated on the wet asphalt up ahead. I didn’t want to think about my job history or our financial woes. Instead I focused on the summery sunrise over the Cascade Mountains due east. I stared at it a moment, charmed by its contrast to the more typical Bellevue, Washington gloom brooding overhead.
I should’ve been asleep, but I needed to toss trash from a fundraiser rolling around in the back of the van. Leland Rosenberg, my boss at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home, had asked me to dump the bags at his second business, Rosenberg Laboratory, as FoY’s Dumpsters were full from a recent bathroom remodel. His mood had been edgy, kind of insistent I dispose of them last night. I confess, before I could carry out this task, a minor traffic accident and an all-important overnight obligation had waylaid me. I didn’t bother to sigh over how blunders always seemed to pepper my work performance. Some things were fated to be. After all, I slogged at my job for money not joy. It isn't that I don't like working at FoY, it just isn’t my dream gig. You see, I yearned to be a private detective, a Veronica Mars 2.0. Problem is, my grandfather is against the idea. Dead set against it.
So with the stench from the trash bags mounting, I steered FoY’s van onto the off-ramp and headed toward Rosenberg Laboratory just off the freeway exit. My mind was filled with thoughts of a steamy shower, maybe a few hours of shut-eye before punching the clock at nine. I stared forward, squinted. And iced over. Up ahead. Wrong-way traveling. A panel truck advanced, peeling rubber.
Faster.
Closer.
Zeroed in to hit me.
I whipped the van off the road, the red, white, and blue panel truck whizzing past. I slammed on the brakes, fighting to control the wheel. I wrestled with it, panicked, my mind flashing on one fortunate thing: no seniors were in the van.
Tons of hazards burst before my eyes. I struggled to absorb them. A mangled guardrail zigzagged up ahead; its many gaps from other out-of-control vehicles big as life. Worse was the wall of giant Douglas-firs growing beyond, lower trunks scarred, limbs low and swaying.
I was going to careen through the railing.
I was going to hit the trees.
I was going to die.

Review:  Super Love is a fun, quick read!  Dinah is reunited with other super heroes and the pages just zing with fun dialog, action and great pacing! It was neat tor ead about her Super Hero status, and she's got a few feelings to deal with now that she's back around someone that she gave her heart to, Myles Steele.

Myles is intriguing and yummy! While I enjoyed a quick read, I think this would have turned out great in a full length novel mode, but it does work just fine as a shorter work. I'm not complaining about the fact that it was a shorter work, I say I'd love it to be longer just for the fact that I enjoyed the characters and the fun in this story. I can't wait to see what else this author has in store!

VBT Review: Torn

TORN
By: Amber Lehman

Blurb

A group of Southern Californian teens learn pivotal lessons about sexuality, friendship, love and life.
It was different this time; we weren't acting on a dare. I knew our motive; we were practicing the act, hoping to impress the right boy when it came time. But then something happened in the mix of the moment, in the mix of the alcohol. It wasn't planned, but somehow our kissing experiment turned into something else. Things went further . . . and once they had, once I returned to earth from the euphoria . . . I wrestled with my feelings at that frank realization, questioning whether our said objective was entirely true.
When fourteen-year old Krista McKinley transfers from Catholic school in Ohio to California's public Crestmount High, she discovers she has a lot to learn. Luckily, she is befriended by Carrie and Brandon and things start to look up. But when a simple dare tests Krista's values, it sends her entire world spiraling into a confusing series of events that leaves her questioning her identity as well as the people around her.

Excerpt
Sunday night. I sat perched on the chair behind my desk with only the faint glow from my reading light. By 10:00 p.m. the night air was crisp as it floated through my bedroom window. I had been by myself for hours now.
I closed my math book and abandoned my homework. I couldn’t concentrate; wandering thoughts continued to distract me. I bit my lip and thought about my options. I wanted to talk. I needed to talk, and Brandon was the only person in whom I could confide. It was late, but I picked up the phone and dialed, praying he would answer.
After the third ring, Brandon said, “Hello?”
It’s Krista.”
Hey, gorgeous.” He sounded remarkably awake.
I can’t sleep.”
Daydreaming about Daemon?”
Try bored. Josh is on a date and basically told us not to expect him home. Marc had an emergency call from the hospital. Just thought I’d see if you wanted to come over—hang out.”
After a moment he said, “Sure.”
You’re the best, Brandon.”
That’s what they all say.”
I couldn’t help smiling. “See you when you get here.”
I hung up the phone, then sat back on my bed and began thinking. I was scared to be alone in the house at night, but I had other things on my mind, too. Tonight would be the perfect opportunity to talk to Brandon. I had a daring question for him—that is, if I got up the courage to ask him. I’d been tossing around an unlikely idea in my head ever since he had surprised me with his boyishly sweet kiss. Just as Carrie and I practiced I began to wonder how things might be if I were doing the same thing with a boy.
Was it horrible of me to consider it? Was it something I had no business asking? Would he hate me or be offended if I did? I was afraid. I couldn’t be sure how he would react. Well, there was only one way to find out.
Twenty minutes later, Brandon rang my doorbell.
Coming,” I yelled, sliding down the tile of the foyer in my stocking feet to come to a skidding halt at the door. I flung it wide open.
Hey, you,” he said through a brilliant smile. He wore well-fitted blue jeans and a silky, short-sleeved, button down shirt in a deep shade of blue. He looked beautiful in blue. He came inside and closed the door behind him. We hugged in greeting, and I inhaled a sweet hint of his cologne.
Thanks for coming.”
No problem.”
You can pick the movie,” I said as we walked into the living room. “Over by the cabinet.” Brandon headed toward the entertainment center while I went into the kitchen.
I returned with two cans of Coke, then flopped down Indian-style on the couch. “Did you find one?” I said.
Smiling, he handed me Can’t Buy Me Love.
Again? We’ve only seen it a hundred times.”
But Patrick Dempsey’s irresistible in this role.” He gave me one of his ridiculous grins.
Fine. But I’ve never understood your taste in men.”
Brandon put the movie in, then sat down beside me. I tossed him a bag of Skittles. The usual hard-fast rules about not talking didn’t apply to this movie, since we knew it by heart. Sometimes it seemed as if we played it solely for background atmosphere. I made myself comfortable as the opening credits began to roll.
How’s Carrie?” he asked.
Carrie hadn’t been at school for the past two days. In fact, her school attendance over the past month had been erratic. I really had no answer. When I had called Carrie’s house, her mother stated that she wasn’t accepting phone calls. So far, she hadn’t let me in on what was going on.
She still hasn’t talked to me about it.”
I turned my attention back to the television and watched half-heartedly.
The movie had been on for a while as I considered my dilemma. I wrestled with the idea of approaching the subject; it had the potential to turn things weird, real quick. Brandon laughed at a scene from the movie.
I made a tentative beginning. “Brandon.”
He turned to look at me. “What’s up?”
I kind of . . . need to talk to you.”
So talk.”
How many girls have you slept with?” Not very subtle. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” I added quickly.
He studied me. “That question’s left field even for you,” he said.
I shrugged.
So what’s up?” Grabbing the remote control, he lowered the volume.
Just curious, I guess. You’ve never really talked about it.”
There isn’t much to tell.”
But you have. . .”
Yes. Twice.”
I reached for my soda trying to act casual. “Did you like it?”
The first time was kinda weird,” he said as if he were summoning some far off memory. “Very vague. I don’t know . . . I was really drunk. Barely have any recollection of it at all.”
So if you liked guys, why did you bother with girls?”
I guess because I was kind of lost. I knew I felt differently, but at the same time, I was afraid someone would find out, so I tried to ignore it. Basically went along with what everyone else was doing. All anyone ever talked about was how great sex was. There was always talk about what girls did what.” He shrugged. “My curiosity got the better of me. I figured I was missing out on something.”
And . . . ”
His lips crooked into a smile and then he laughed. “It was . . . interesting.”
When was that?”
Two years ago.”
Were you nervous?”
Considering I had no idea what I was doing, yeah, I’d say so.” After a moment he added, “Well, at least I tried it.”
But I saw a talk show that made it sound like gay men are totally turned off by women.”
You watch too many of those damn talk shows. I can’t speak for everybody, but not all gays feel that way.” Brandon studied my eyes. “Am I going to have to drag out what’s bugging you?”
My stomach fell and my heart rate quickened. A lump formed in my throat.
Does this have to do with Carrie? You know. . . I’ll help in any way I can.”
He might live to regret those words. “Thanks,” I managed to say. This was it. If I was ever going to have the nerve to ask him, it had to be now.
Are you feeling well?” he said suddenly.
My voice, barely audible, struggled to get the words out; I had officially reached panic mode. “I need to ask you a favor.” Looking down at the couch, I picked at the fabric. “A big one.”
All right. What is it?”
I couldn’t look at him, but I mustered up all the courage I had and took a deep breath. “Would you . . . ” I stopped, cleared my mind and tried again. My voice was barely audible. “Will you be my first?”
Heat rushed to my cheeks so fast that I thought I would surely pass out during the awkward silence that followed. I felt like an ass. I flicked a nervous glance at him. His face was utterly blank.
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have mentioned it.” Why had I opened my mouth?
Kris, you can have any guy you want. Why me?”
I trust you. I don’t know . . . all these things have been going on with Carrie . . . it’s so confusing,” I said. “Anyway, I—I want it to be you.” There. I said it. “Will you do it?”
There was no way to know what he was thinking because he didn’t answer me for a while. His voice had lost all humor. “You kinda caught me off guard.” He looked at me again. “How long have you been thinking about this? Have you actually thought this through?”
I ignored his first question. “I have. I’m completely sure.” I wasn’t, but I had to do something. “If I’ve offended you . . .”
It’s not that.”
He sat perched on the edge of the couch, tipped forward with his elbows resting on his knees. He stared at his hands, brows pursed in concern. “You’re serious.”
Dead serious.”
I can get the keys to the beach house on Monday. We’ll—”
No.” I swallowed hard. “It has to be now. You know Carrie and I are leaving for dance camp next week and I want to know…well I don’t now what I want to know but I want it to happen before then. And tonight, no one will be home tonight.”
He fell back into the couch, almost pale. “Tonight?”
I need to know before I see Carrie again.”
Brandon opened his mouth but silence filled the air. He closed it when he couldn’t find a thing to say.
Kris . . . ”
I understand. It was ridiculous of me to think . . . ” I looked down, shifting my attention to my fingers. I finally made the admission. “At the party, I tried with Eric, but—”
What? You really must’ve been on drugs! That’s craziness, Kris. I can’t believe you even considered it.”
His vehemence surprised me, and I sat there, silent.
You’re afraid,” I said finally.
Terrified.” He rubbed his hands together. “For more than one reason. If anything went wrong, I’d hate myself for it. And won’t you regret it not happening with someone you really like, maybe even someone you love?”
I thought you didn’t believe in love.”
We’re talking about you.”
I just want to experience what most girls do. Doesn’t that make sense?”
Make sense? You really don’t believe this a typical request, do you?”
I’m not expecting it to be perfect. I know the first time is generally a disappointment. I read Seventeen magazine.”
His expression was wary. Maybe he didn’t want me to decide my sexual preference based on an experience with him.
He rubbed his hands over his face. “We’ll see what happens,” he said.

Review Rating: 3.5 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: Torn is one of those novels that makes you stop and think. it delves into the complexity of teenage lives and their trials and tribulations of the modern world. This book seems to know no bounds, and it's really going to make the reader think. And feel.  The author has taken a subject and brought it out into the light, and I have to give Ms.  Lehman kudos for doing such a thing.  Not everyone can pull that kind of thing off well, or even dare to pull it off at all.

Krista is new in town, and has the task of finding her place in a new school. She's dubbed as ordinary, Plain Jane, but manages to find herself in the middle of the popular crowd. Maybe starting off in a new place won't be so bad after all.

Her friends are the type that find ways to explore territories that aren't for everyone. It seems each and every friend is on the fence about who they are, and what they want out of life in regards to that.    One thing leads to another, and now there's no stopping the turn of events that follows.

There are some things I'm not quite sure how I felt about, but that's what makes a good novel. Even if it's something I don't agree on, or that I question, Torn made me FEEL.  It gave me a reflection of my own teenage years and that no matter how awkward they were for me, that there were some facing things far more complex than I had.  Krista is fourteen, but there are things she faces early on that made me raise a brow, but then again, times have changed.

The story is written in first person, which gives us an in depth glimpse of Krista's feelings. one of the problems I had was that it felt like the scenes were cut off in odd places, and sometimes there were parts that didn't move the story along. It was rather jumpy in spots.

This isn't a light read by any regard, but it's not super dark high angst, either. Yes, there is some of that in the story, but this book focuses on characters and how they deal with the situations as they come.  Very interesting and thought provoking. I'm glad I had a chance to read it.

Author Info
At age 22, author Amber Lehman began researching and writing what would become the novel TORN. Her writing occurred during a chaotic period of her life and she was often forced to set aside writing time to tend to family and personal matters. It was 5 years before TORN was completed to her satisfaction. It went through too many editing stages to count, and the end result was quite different than what was originally an 1100 page novel. After years of setting it aside, Amber finally revisited it and it was trimmed down to the 404 pages you now see. Then she waited another 9 years before she got the courage to publish it. Although TORN is closer to what Amber calls “faction” than fiction, TORN draws upon experiences from her life as she observed and participated in the social dramas surrounding her friends lives and past relationships.
A native of southern California, Amber loves to write and illustrate every chance she gets. She spends most of her days conversing with her cat, Mouse. She enjoys German culture and language, and while it’s no secret that she holds a special affinity for the LGBTQ community, she does also look forward to writing books in many different genres.
